About Arboretum Lussich

Arboretum Lussich

Arboretum Lussich is a vast botanical garden and natural preserve located on the peninsula of Punta Ballena, near the popular resort city of Punta del Este in the Maldonado Department of Uruguay. Established in 1896 by Antonio Lussich, a marine captain and forestry enthusiast, the arboretum was originally a private forest meant to enrich and protect the local ecosystem. Today, it spans approximately 1,000 hectares and hosts an extensive variety of native and introduced tree species from around the world, including numerous conifers, eucalyptus, and deciduous specimens, creating a living museum of global flora. The terrain includes rolling hills, rocky outcrops, and paths that offer panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged coastline. The arboretum is popular with hikers, bird watchers, and nature lovers who enjoy its well-marked trails winding through diverse vegetation and offering frequent scenic overlooks. Its ecological value lies in reforestation efforts, endangered species habitats, and preservation of coastal forest ecosystems. Key landmarks include viewpoints like Cerro de los Burros and the resemblance of its natural landscape to the famous Casapueblo nearby. Visitors also appreciate its quiet, less commercial atmosphere compared to nearby beach destinations. The arboretum’s mix of exotic and native plants alongside the ocean creates a unique environment distinct in Uruguay's coastal region. Historic importance combined with recreational opportunities make it a worthwhile destination for day hikes, photography, and educational visits focused on botany and conservation.
